Two masterpieces in one Playmobil set The Rijksmuseum has released a unique Marten & Oopjen Playmobil set especially on the occasion of the major restoration of Rembrandt's masterpieces Marten & Oopjen. The set consists of two miniature figures by Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, complete with fan.
Marten & Oopjen: together for almost 400 years
Marten Soolmans was the son of a wealthy Flemish immigrant who owned a successful sugar refinery in Amsterdam. In 1634 he confidently posed for Rembrandt, then one of the most sought-after portrait painters in Amsterdam. Because of his lavish costume, with expensive lace and huge rosettes on the shoes, they called him a dandy in the 19th century. His wife Oopjen Coppit comes from a real Amsterdam family that belonged to a small group of rulers. Oopjen's grandfather had become rich by trading grain and gunpowder. Even though Oopjen is dressed less modern than Marten, with her black silk dress and jewelry she certainly shows her wealth.
